Everyone seems pissed off in Columbia Falls, Maine. And by everyone I mean only the 485 people who live in this off-the-beaten path town. Of all the things they could be fighting over, this tiny town chose the American flag. On the 4th of July, no less.
But this isn't some regular ole Stars and Stripes we're talking about here. No, this is the biggest god damned flag I've ever seen in my life. The question is: Is it too big?
Dubbed the Flagpole of Freedom Park this bohemoth would stand 1,461 feet tall, taller than the Empire State Building. It would include elevators which would take visitors up to observation towers on top of the big ass flag pole. Residents say the plan is about much more than the flag. Also on the agenda: A 4,000 seat auditorium, restaurants and a wall with all 24 million names of Americans killed during wars.
Some residents are mad at the size of the flag. Others are mad that it will seem shockingly out of place in a spot known for it's tranquility and wildlife. Still others just seem to be offended at the sight of the flag in general as if it's a sort of masturbatory act in a moment where they see America as a negative force in the world.
What do I think?
I think you don't measure someone's pride in America by the size of their flag. We don't need to enter the world of truck dealerships in the never ending quest for the biggest flag on planet Earth. Interupting the natural environment and spending millions of dollars to have the Biggest Flag seems like a massive waste of time and resources. Before we go building dumb new shit, why don't we fix the old infrastructure that continues to crumble before our eyes?
What about you? What do you think? Is this flag too big or what?
